An overview of infertility

Infertility is essentially the inability to conceive children. For a woman to conceive a child, intercourse must take place at a time when an egg is released from her ovary, her hormones must be balanced and it is essential that the systems that produce eggs and sperm must be working at optimum levels. Women who can get pregnant but cannot carry the child to full term may also be infertile. One of the most common causes of infertility is problems with ovulation. Signs of this may include absent or irregular periods. Ovulation problems can be caused by Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (a hormone imbalance), or Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (when a woman’s ovaries stop working before she is 40.

There are many different causes of infertility in both male and females but specific causes of infertility in women are:

  • Age related factors
  • Tubal blockage
  • Uterine problems
  • Endometriosis
  • Previous tubal ligation
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
