An overview of menopause

Menopause is a natural biological process that every woman goes through. It signifies the permanent end of monthly periods and fertility. During this period of transition, women stop producing eggs and their bodies produces less progesterone and estrogen. This process is confirmed once a woman’s period has ceased for 12 consecutive months.

There is no set age that signals the onset of menopause but it generally happens between the ages of 45 to 55. Some symptoms of menopause may include:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sore breasts
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Hot flashes
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin, hair and other tissue changes
